Questions About Dental Implants
What are dental implants?
A dental implant is a permanent replacement for a tooth root. It is surgically implanted and fuses with your jawbone. It is used to anchor an artificial tooth or bridge.
Why should I consider dental implants over other tooth replacement options?
There are many advantages to dental implants:
- Dental implants are permanent.
- They secure your artificial tooth or bridge without relying on the surrounding teeth for support so they do not damage or put stress on your healthy teeth.
- By replacing the tooth root they protect you from gum shrinkage and bone loss, preserving your natural beauty and youthful appearance as well as your dental health.
- Since they never need to be replaced and they prevent damage to your surrounding teeth, they will save you future money and time in the dentist’s chair.
- Because they provide a permanent, stable anchor, you will not have to worry about your bridge slipping and causing pain or difficulty with chewing.
- Dental implants allow you to care for your artificial teeth just as you would care for your natural teeth.
The gap from my missing tooth is not visible. Why should I replace it?
Your remaining teeth will slowly shift to fill the gap. This will put them out of proper alignment and make your bite misaligned. A misaligned bite can cause misaligned jaw joints which has the name of Temporomandibular Joint Disorder and a long list of painful symptoms. You will incur future dental bills to treat it and to restore good alignment to your teeth. That will be unnecessary if you act now and fill the gap. Once it is filled with a dental implant holding a replacement tooth, you need only give it good daily hygiene as you do anyway for your natural teeth.
How long do dental implants last?
Dental implants are permanent and need no care or replacement. The artificial tooth or bridge that is attached to the implant can be replaced if it becomes damaged, but this will not affect the implant itself.
Are dental implants right for everyone?
Some people cannot have dental implants. The best candidates are in good overall health and have adequate jaw bone material to hold the implant. In some cases a bone graft can be done if the jawbone is too thin or short.
