TMD Treatment
Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (TMD) can cause a lifetime of pain and severe damage to your teeth. Successful treatment can relieve your pain, protect your teeth from further damage, and improve your overall health.
Initial TMD treatment can be as simple as resting the jaw joints and temporarily switching to a soft diet. The jaw joints can be stabilized through use of a specially-designed bite splint (or bite guard) that fits over the teeth.
These bite splints redistribute the stresses on the jaw joints and muscle system while specifically guiding jaw joint movements. This in turn encourages the muscles to relax and over time reduces inflammation in the jaw and neck area.
For many patients, treatment stops there. If your natural bite is healthy and the muscles have relaxed for a period of time, your bite can go back to its proper alignment, and without the stress and tension it will stay that way.
However, some patients have misaligned teeth and left untreated they create a significant bite alignment issue. Dr. Kleive will plan dental work to correct the alignment issue so that the jaw and teeth will work comfortably together.
